Did you know that the third Writercon is happening this year? It's July 31-August 2 in Minneapolis.

What is Writercon, you ask? It's a convention for everyone who loves fanfiction: writers, readers, betas, archivists, and more. We've got discussion panels, writing workshops, parties, and an excellent lineup of guest speakers. Check out this great write-up of Writercon at the Convention Fans Blog.

Programming

We've gone multi-fandom this year and are welcoming everyone who loves fanfiction, regardless of which fannish community you call home. To see what our attendees are into, check out our attendee fandom poll. Do you know anyone who's coming? Find out on our 2009 attendee page.

Take a look at our awesome lineup of panels and workshops, submit a bid for a fan-led event, plan to spend lots of time chatting and snacking in our hospitality suite, and don't miss our Friday night cocktail party--we'll have music, drinks, dancing, and lots of fun.

* Kristina Busse, Ph.D.: Dr. Busse is co-author of Fan Fiction and Fan Communities in the Age of the Internet, and co-creator of the online academic journal Transformative Works and Cultures. Visit Dr. Busse's website for more information about her work.

* Debra Doyle, Ph.D.: Dr. Doyle writes science fiction, fantasy and mystery stories, many with her husband James Macdonald. Their most recent joint works include Land of Mist and Snow, an alternate-historical naval fantasy set in the Civil War, (Eos, December 2006), and the short story "Philologos: or, A Murder in Bistrita" (The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, February 2008.) A full bibliography is available on their web page. Dr. Doyle also is well known as an instructor with her husband at the Viable Paradise Writers' Workshop, an annual science fiction and fantasy writers' workshop held each autumn on Martha's Vineyard.

Why am I posting this to allaboutspike? Because 1) I'm co-chair of Writercon this year, 2) Writercon is for people who love fanfiction, and if you're reading this, I assume you do!, and 3) while we're definitely multi-fandom now, Writercon has its roots in the Jossverse--more than half of our concom members are listed as authors at All About Spike.

Moving Servers

No more review spam? (fingers crossed)

The All About Spike review system has been a frequent target of spambots in recent years. (Robots that trawl through the internet leaving spammy comments wherever they can.) I've been deleting the spam, but it's still annoying that it comes through at all.

So rather than disabling the review system (which, to my delight, people still use!), I've installed a spam protection system. Usually you see these as those annoying squiggly letters that you have to type in. I decided to try a nicer one called Asirra, which works by showing a database of dogs and cats in need of adoption. In order to prove you're human, you click on the cats. If you do it correctly, your review will post as normal.

Hopefully this'll stop the spam problem and will be more amusing than annoying (and maybe it'll even help some animals get adopted). Let me know if you encounter any problems. You can try it out by reviewing a story at All About Spike (surely there are some hidden treasures that you haven't read already?).

What? Updates at All About Spike? Really?

Yes, there have actually been a few final updates at All About Spike.

I went ahead and added most of what's been on my "To Archive" list for the past year or so. You'll find all the new stories (well, not actually new; these are older stories by Herself, FayJay, and Colleen) at this page:

All About Spike is now officially closed to new stories. I will continue to update works in progress, series', existing stories, and author information, at the request of the author. I'm not actually keeping up with Spike fic myself, so authors, please email me directly if updates are needed.

The site will continue to stay online, as I've always promised. I've set the homepage to link to five random stories; this is my way of encouraging readers to check out the 1,000+ excellent stories housed in the All About Spike archive:
